Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Welshpool artist Sally Crosby to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from rural Mid Wales. I started with piano lessons age 5. Violin followed shortly after and the clarinet. I’ve been playing guitar since age 15/16 and ukulele age 23 maybe?
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Laura Marling was a big influence when I first started playing guitar. She creates beautiful acoustic pieces. As a teenager I loved P!nk, Taylor Swift, Snow Patrol, Fall Out Boy, Kate Nash, Newton Faulkner and many more. In terms of artists making great records now I have to say I love Holly Humberstone, Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine and Maggie Rogers to name a few.
How would you describe your sound?
Acoustic folk-pop singer-songwriter stuff!
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
“Tough” was released earlier this month. It’s all about resilience. It’s based on true thoughts and feelings, as always!
What’s your local music scene like?
Dire. There isn’t a single open mic in town. There’s a music festival in May I’ve played a few times. There is live music but not nearly enough of it!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Keep making YouTube videos! I have over a hundred cover and original song videos up on YouTube. Subscribe and join the gang? I also wanna play a few open mics and get more original music recorded.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Yeah, Holly Humberstone and all of the above! Sody and Nina Nesbitt to name a couple more!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I like to regale the one where I played at Wakestock Festival in North Wales. It was a surreal experience. Arrived on site and got picked up by golf buggy. Dropped off back stage to find Tom Odell playing ping pong. When it came to playing my set I couldn’t hear myself due to Frank Turner soundchecking loudly nearby. Had to just hope I was playing ok! Apparently it was good, as I browsed the stalls after and was gifted a free bracelet ’cause they liked the music!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Everything was written from the heart. I said it ’cause I meant it!
