Every Monday we will be bringing you an interview with an unsigned singer or band as part of our Independent Music Monday series. This week, we caught up with Nico M.
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from London. When I was a kid I was always singing and listening to music, but just at 18 I discovered I wanted to do that as ‘job’.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences when I was growing up were Anastacia, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson and Adam Lambert and my influences now, besides the artists I just named, are Whitney Houston, who I fell in love with early this year, Jessie J, Emeli Sande, Leona Lewis and Lady Gaga.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as catchy 80’s power pop-rock.
What is your latest single called and what was the influence behind it?
I just released a single called ‘Weaker’ and it’s a powerful song that I wrote about feeling alone and not feeling accepted by other people, and get bullied because of being ‘different’.
What’s your local music scene like?
I perform at open mic nights around London and sometimes I sing in Charity Events in support of Cancer Research UK, Nordoff Robbins and Homelessness.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I have a few things planned like recording an EP, keep writing songs and keep performing live. I am very excited about it!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Oh definitely, I would like to collaborate with Linda Perry and Sia, beside all my other musical influences! I know, there are so many!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Definitely that time I was singing accompanied by a live orchestra and I forgot the words of the song I was singing haha!!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I am an open book: you get what you see.
