Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Guildford singer Bianca Bazin to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Guildford in Surrey and I grew up spending all my free time dancing, singing, acting and playing piano. I attended Italia Conti from the age of about 6 and went on to Guildford School of Acting during 6th form. I also did a couple of music courses at the Academy of Contemporary Music when I was younger. I always loved performing and it’s always been a huge part of my life. It officially became my career after I left uni and I sent myself to London Music School and started songwriting and gigging around London.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
When I was growing up I was very influenced by what my brother was listening to, so I listened to a lot of Green Day, Linkin Park, Blink 182, Gorillaz and Avril Lavigne. I remember the first CD I ever bought was Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag but my favourite ever album when I was younger was Maroon 5 – Songs About Jane and I still love to listen to that album today! Today my music tastes have altered somewhat and my favourite artists include Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Tom Walker, Oh Wonder and Sigrid.
How would you describe your sound?
Someone once reviewed my music and called it ‘dirty pop’ which I thought was perfect. I love having depth to the music and lyrics as the majority of all my songs come from real life experiences.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called Perishing Heart. This song came from a period in my life where I fell unwell and I felt very alone (’so she dances in the storm alone without a cause’) and so I started searching for answers and meaning to life, and through doing that I turned it all around. This song was meant to uplift and inspire. It questions what happens after we die (our ‘perishing heart’) and seeks the awakening offered through spirituality (‘just give me the key to enlighten, the spark that ignites it, Valhalla hell here I come’).
What is your local music scene like?
Guildford has a buzzing music scene as there is the big music school there, the ACM, and various performing arts schools.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I am currently planning to try and get 2 more singles out this year and I’m currently recording an EP to release at the start of 2020. It’s such a waste seeing music sit there in my Dropbox, I can’t wait to get it all out!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Afraid not… they’ve all been rather positive and normal. I really enjoyed performing at The Big Feastival though – I was playing Perishing Heart when a large group of women all got up and started dancing and waving their arms around, beverages in hand, and before I knew it the whole audience was joining in. That was a great feeling.
What is the one thing you want your readers to know about you?
As a child I had some grand goals for life; I thought I would be prime minister or win a Nobel prize. Now my life goal is just to do as much good in the world as I can, no matter how big or small; treat others as you wish to be treated, learn from your mistakes, keep experiencing new things, be there for the ones you love, know that you’re never alone – there’s always someone who cares, and laugh as much as possible.
