Music interview: LOGUOS

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Dublin artist LOGUOS to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you get into music?
I’m from Templeogue in Dublin, not too far from the city centre. I first got into music when I was young – we had a piano in the house and my mum started teaching me when I was probably about 5 or 6. I spent years learning classical piano, which people find hard to believe given how my music sounds now! I guess that’s how I truly started – it wasn’t until I was 16 before I got into music production.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
As a kid I was obsessed with Michael Jackson – his music had such a universal appeal. I got into electronic music through Disclosure, their attention to detail in their productions is just incredible. They were the main influence in me wanting to start making music, especially with their album ‘Settle’. As for influences now… there’s so many. If I had to pick 3, I’d say George FitzGerald, Friend Within, Tchami, and actually I’ll also say 1000 Beasts! He’s Irish and he’s just deadly in so many ways. His productions are so versatile.

How would you describe your sound?
I’d describe the music I’m making now as an interesting take on house music. Banging basslines, classic house beats, with a little something extra. With the latest track I tried to make the bridge section using this big 808 bass and a bouncing plucky synth. Was a lot of fun, and just thought it was an unconventional approach to making a house record.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Latest release is called ‘You Can Feel My Love’. I wanted to create something catchy and that was gonna bang in a club environment! Also I was seeing someone at the time, and the vocal hook was probably based from that experience.

What’s your local music scene like?
It can be great, and it can be an absolute pain! There’s lots of opportunities, a lot of great venues are happy to help musicians when they’re starting out – but it can be so hard to get people in the door. My current struggle is trying to move from smaller more intimate venues into clubs, which I think would really suit my music.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
I’m sitting on quite a number of tracks at the minute – currently figuring out the best way to put them out there. I am looking into pulling an EP together early next year, and also maybe a single or two before that. As for festivals, we’ll have to wait and see! Working very hard to make that happen. Would be thrilled to play one or two next summer.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
My dream collaboration would have to be with Disclosure. There’s loads of great Irish artists at the moment who I’d also love to work with – I’ll give the ELKIN girls a special mention 🙂

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I played a gig in Whelan’s recently and it also happened to be my 21st birthday. Had a good few friends come along to see me play. Once I finished everyone started singing happy birthday. That was pretty funny to me – also just really lovely, I’ll come back to you when I’ve something to top it! No mad stories to tell as of yet!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
My name is pronounced like the word ‘logos’ – pretend there’s no ‘U’ in it!!!! Although I kind of like the ambiguity surrounding its pronunciation… Maybe I shouldn’t have clarified that 🙂
