Music interview: Henderson

Every Monday I will be bringing you an interview with an independent band, duo or music artist. This week, I caught up with Josh from Sheffield band Henderson to find out more…

Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the band name?
Josh Rhodes, Joe Wright, Matt Bond, Kierran Bond. We all know each other from school, but we started the band when I saw a friend of a friend on the train to Sheffield and naturally we started talking about music. He proposed that we get together and have a jam. He told me about Kierran Bond’s little brother (Matt) would be interested. So we all got together in the kids attic bedroom and sat down and realised yeah man, this is a bit of me this. Funnily enough the kid who started the band isn’t in the band anymore which is weird considering me and Matt wouldn’t have ever thought about making a band together. Joe joined. Jake joined. Jake left. Kierran joined. Boom hello 2019. There’s a few different reasons why we’re called Henderson. The most obvious one is the fact we’re from Sheffield and Henderson’s Relish is a massive thing in Sheff. Not the main reason though funnily enough. If you search for Henderson on Urban Dictionary it comes up with ‘the act of falling in love with someone, telling them, then lose interest within a week’ just thought that was quite accurate at the time for me and Matt when we first started because if it’s something we’re not passionate about or care for then we put in a half arsed attempt at making it happen/doing it. Unfortunately. Lol

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up we were all brought up on different types of music, Joe was listening to Richard Hawley before he could walk. Kierran and Matt being brothers had a similar music taste ranging from Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac, Kasabian, Kings of Leon, obviously Arctic Monkeys. Me, I grew up on Oasis, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Smiths, OMD, Joy Division, (my dad was an 80’s kid). It all sort of stayed with me but we all listen to the same stuff now such as Jamie T, Foals, Django Django to name a few. The list goes on.

How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is like you’ve been hit in the face with raw lamb shank but then can’t help but smile, I like the crunch that guitars can make on top of a disco beat. Toe tapping madness with a face melting solo whether it be on bass, guitar or a shoe lace.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest release is called Brightness Collides and the meaning behind the single is a sort of reflection on a personal encounter with the opposite sex, but no matter how hard you tried to fight off this overwhelming feeling of lust/love or whatever you want to call it, you’d always shy away from it as a defence mechanism embedded in your brain from previous relationships. Whenever you try and see the light there’s always something in the way.

What’s your local music scene like?
The Sheffield music scene is fucking buzzing at the minute. Everyone knows everyone and majority of us are all in the same boat so we get on well! People want other people to succeed which is always nice, nobody wants to be involved with people that wanna watch you fail. It’s all about unity. We gotta look out for each other man. In this industry it’s hard to find someone that wants to do you right, instead of bleeding you dry for everything you’ve got!

What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
No albums as of yet but who knows, we could flip this music scene on its head. I guess only time will tell. Festivals we’re currently starting to apply for so again, who knows, potentially be the start of something beautiful.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to write a song with Ludovico Einaudi. Just to see how his brilliant mind works.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
One time Matt (bassist) bought a new wireless adapter for his bass and ended up playing majority of the gig outside the venue talking to passers by mid songs. Sounded awful on stage like so we weren’t very happy with him at the time but looking back on it, it was super funny.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That we don’t take life too seriously, we don’t take ourselves too seriously and we try and portray that in the songs we write. If you come to a gig, come and say hi before or after, hell even get up on stage if you want. Just know that there’s still people like us out there that still use life as an excuse to have fun. Oh and follow us pleaaaaase. Nice one..
