Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Dunfermline singer Amy Lou to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from the bonny wee town Dunfermline in Fife, Scotland! I like to think it’s a boiling pot for some amazing bands coming through Scotland at the moment. I grew up in a world of musical theatre and am dram and for years I was set on that being my path but at 14 I moved over to writing my own songs and I’ve never really looked back.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Whatever my dad was listening to in the car – so it was usually Ocean Colour Scene or Kate Bush or Dunfermline’s finest exports Big Country. To this day I still adore Kate Bush but recently I’m really loving Declan McKenna and a band called Middle Kids from Australia who I supported last year.
How would you describe your sound?
Loud, fiesty, and sprinkled with glitter.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My recent tune “Addiction” since released on 15th November. It’s written about my girlfriend – her dad was really involved in the rave scene in our town back in the 90s – so musically the song I like to think honours him as the song features a wee rave like donks.
What’s your local music scene like?
As I’ve said I think Dunfermline’s scene is beyond class but sadly it seems to get overlooked in Scotland compared to the likes of Glasgow and Edinburgh. The actual scene is amazing – a lot of the bands I play with I’ve known the boys for years and I know a lot of them see me as their wee sister and it’s amazing to have their support and advice.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months? Any albums or festivals?
A lot. A lot is changing and there’s a lot under the floorboards getting worked on at the moment. 2020 is going to be the year of the Lou.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
No joke, I’d really love someone to remix my songs make them proper 2000s clubland floor fillers kind of tunes, so Scooter, Cascada – gee us a ring x
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Recently my drummer Joe has been getting a lot of female (and male) attention at shows recently!! So it seems every show he’s getting pictures – one of our earlier gigs he had a woman ask if he was married and a number was slipped in his direction.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I have an intense obsession with the drink Irn Bru and really my biggest ambition is a sponsorship, so if anyone has any contacts with anyone high up within Irn Bru tell them Amy Lou’s calling.
You can find out more about Amy Lou via SoundCloud, Spotify or Twitter.
