Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London singer Charlotte Campbell to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am originally from North West London, I grew up in the suburbs of London and I first got into performing through doing amateur musical theatre after school. Then, in my teenage years I was given a guitar and learnt to play and sing at the same time, which led me to write my own songs and explore the world of singer/songwriters, pop folk artists and female musicians who became my biggest influences and idols.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I mostly listened to the music my parents played, so The Beatles and Carole King. I still love music from that era, but since then I’ve also discovered my own tastes and I adore Alanis Morissette, Tracey Chapman, Ingrid Michaelson, Colbie Caillat and Taylor Swift.
How would you describe your sound?
Indie folk pop with a splash of country.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
It’s called “Thanks To You” and it’s about gratitude and saying thank you to the person who always makes you smile.
What’s your local music scene like?
London’s music scene is great, you can find live music any night of the week if you know where to look! It can be a little oversaturated, especially as small indie venues have been closing down over the past few years so there are a lot more musicians than there are stages, but it’s a wonderful city for meeting fellow artists and luckily some of the best small venues are still thriving.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I am currently recording a collection of songs that I think will be an EP – I’d love to do an album but just taking it a few songs at a time for now! My next single is due out on October 9th!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Taylor Swift would have to be my ultimate answer. She is such a talented songwriter and I’d love to collaborate with her! I also would hope she’d bring her cats to the session…
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
As I do a lot of busking in London, I find myself in lots of very strange situations! The funniest one was probably busking along the river Thames in May and a bunch of Storm Troopers appeared – turns out it was May the 4th and they were Star Wars fans on a march to celebrate! They stopped for a picture with me – there were so many of them and their costumes were amazing; it was bizarre!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I write songs to make people smile, that’s my main aim with my writing and my performances!
