Music interview: The Waterfalls

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Southend-on-Sea band The Waterfalls to find out more…

Who is in the band?
Aaron Wong sings when he feels like it, Owen Tucknott plays guitar brilliantly, Sam Potter does his best impression of a metronome and Ben Abbott was put on bass because he had the wrong technique for the tambourine.

Who were your musical influences growing up and who are your influences now?
Johnny Marr inspired our guitarist to play guitar so, as you can imagine, we were a Smiths-cover-band for the first year. But then we started to get older and we realised distortion was much more fun. We’re lucky that we all have different music tastes, so our influences are wider than before.

How would you describe your sound?
We’re the worst people to ask to be honest. This is the only band any of us have ever been in so, for us, it’s just us playing together. The best term probably is indie pop.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest single is ‘Everything’. It was a small obsession with the drums from ‘Take Me Out’ by Franz Ferdinand. We tried to use the same kind of drums in a previous track called ‘Wholesome’ on our ‘Eventide’ EP, but it wasn’t the right song. We had the right song this time — and it sounds class.

What’s your local music scene like?
We hope it’s still as good as where we left it, but it all depends on how venues will be run. But the crop of bands we used to play with are quality, and there was always a great vibe at every hometown gig we played at Chinnerys in Southend.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Until we see how venues open up again (which won’t be very quickly), we just intend to keep on writing writing writing. We’ve got our next two singles in the works, so it’s back to the studio soon. But once venues open up again we’ve got some big things in the works so stay tuned…

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We’re too moody to collaborate with anyone else. It’s hard enough collaborating with each other! — every chord has to be argued over.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Our guitarist remembers this gig well, because it was the first time anyone was dancing around to our music — we even had a front row! Then what little crowd there was asked us for another song. We did our first encore. But our guitarist was taken by surprise and only realised after the song had started, that he was playing a guitar in a complete different tuning. Didn’t sound great.

What is the one thing that you want your readers to know about you?
If you haven’t heard us before, honestly we’re not that bad.
