Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned singer Wirral TABITHA JADE to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from the Wirral, a place near Liverpool and I naturally fell into music from admiring my favourite artists performances such as Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill and Destiny’s Child. I’ve grown up around a multitude of genres and soundscapes. My dad collected vinyl and would always teach me about Jazz and Soul which my music is inspired by till this day.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
When I was younger I loved Amy Winehouse, I would study her beautiful raw vocals and honest lyrics. I admired her storytelling abilities through music, this inspired me to start songwriting. I’ve always been inspired greatly by the 90’s and 2000’s era, from the style to the music and attitude. Destiny’s Child, Ashanti, Brandy and Mariah have all been important figures that I adored throughout my life. My music definitely carries flavours and elements from these talents. To this day I’m still heavily influenced by this era. Recently I have been listening to a lot of Rosalia, Travis Scott, Mahalia and Doja Cat. I love to listen to varied palate.
How would you describe your sound?
I would say my sound is Rnb Pop, with sweet melodies, powerful vocals and a sprinkle of attitude.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called FYI, the influence behind the song… I wanted to create a summer club song that would make people dance, one of those songs with an infectious beat that you’re compelled to run on to the dance floor. The music I wanted a fresh beat that had a really strong groove but worked with the producer to bring some fresh ambient sounds throughout.
What’s your local music scene like?
My local music scene in Liverpool has a strong live element, lots of independent venues and the usual nationals.
Over the last few years the live scene has been hit hard resulting in a number of sad closures, the likes of the Cavern are still showcasing music pretty much all week. The predominant scene is the indie rock pop scene, and BBC Introducing and promoters play a big part in keeping that alive, the other scenes are varied and more fragmented such as the Urban scene which is definitely on the up with platforms such as Culture Deck providing a platform for MOBO. I grew up playing in cafe’s, pubs, clubs, and then music venues so live is very much part of who I am.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
My plans for the next 12 months, between now and the end of the year will be to release my debut EP called No Label, this will involve video content and promotion for the single releases. I am hoping I can build more followers and supporters with the releases. In the spring a follow up EP will be released with a similar strategy, I am hoping next year I can be playing live again to promote and showcase my new music at major festivals with my band Lewis, Jamie, and Eliza.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I would like to collaborate with Stefflon Don because I love her energy, attitude and sass, also Young T & Bugsy they have the best rhythmic beats and flows.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Funny stories surrounding my live performance, on one occasion I was on stage and crouched to the ground during a powerful vocal delivery and my blonde wig fell onto the stage floor. I felt humiliated intitially then thought who cares and placed it back on my head to raptuous applause from the audience. I now ensure I bring glue with me to every gig!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I am just a down to earth 20 year old, often because I am a musician and have social media presence I am judged and people assume what I am like. What I can say is that I am just like my other friends who are not musicians that like music; fun, fashion, eating out, travelling and having a good time.
