Music interview: Chess Galea

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London based singer Chess Galea to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Malta, live in South London and I was involved in music before I was born. My parents are both into music, especially my mum, who plays the piano. So I was born into a house with 3 pianos, an organ and a harpsichord in it. Intense.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I grew up with Britney, Xtina, The Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys. I LOVE 90’s pop. Through the years I have found true inspiration in Lady Gaga, Prince, Queen (especially Freddie Mercury) and Whitney. I could keep going though. I love great voices; Celine, Mariah…. I can only listen to music if there’s a solid voice at the focal point.

How would you describe your sound?
I would say I’m a 90’s kid determined to keep the RnB going. Usher, Destiny’s Child and Ashanti still sound current. My aim is to create timeless music that matters, with lyrics that have a positive affect on people or help them through a tough time. I can’t put my finger on it so it’s definitely a mish-mash of nostalgic pop, rnb and some modern influences.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
‘Ceciliana’ is my latest baby. I wanted to make something that oozed confidence and sensuality, and something people could dance to. Basically, I’ve become too old to care what people think of me so I just wrote a raunchy song and did what I wanted to do.

What’s your local music scene like?
London is a melting pot of pure talent. It’s competitive, that’s for sure.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I am releasing the video to Ceciliana soon, as well as an acoustic version and a second version with a Spanish/Latina rap. Otherwise, I’m going to keep writing, keep hustling, chipping away and making sure my dreams come true.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Yes. Too many to choose from. Professor Green. Jessie Ware. Camila Cabello….

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Something happens at each show to be honest. I’m such a butterfingers and a klutz.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Underneath it all I’m just a big softie who loves hugs. People listening to my music means the world to me.
