Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London singer Hedara to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from London, and I first got into music when I was very little. I started playing piano and singing around the age of 6. My parents had such a eclectic mix of music and there was always something playing in the house. It would vary from Whitney Houston to Frank Sinatra, to The Clash to Brandy and Monica.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My musical influences growing up were mainly pop/rock bands – I was a huge fan of Paramore! I loved the teenage angst that came out in their songs, and the incredible compositions they created. Now I find Jessie Ware very inspiring, I love her latest album. Halsey is also insanely talented. I look to them for inspiration.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is electro-pop that isn’t afraid to push limits, or completely break down. My music is very honest and raw.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called “Til Times Up”. I realised in my catalogue of music I didn’t actually have a “happy” love song. I basically fell in love and wanted to write all about it, but didn’t want to run the risk of it sounding cheesy. It’s a very honest look at love.
What’s your local music scene like?
My local music scene is usually extremely buzzing! Obviously at the moment everything has stopped, which is totally heartbreaking.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I have a bunch of material ready to release for next year. Off the back of my release with Pablo Bravas, I have some more dance track/features coming out! I’m super excited for all of that.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I’d love to work with Benny Blanco. I think he’s insanely talented!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I always somehow sing the wrong words in one of my songs – without fail. I have no idea how I constantly forget the lyrics that I’VE written!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and that although I live with the condition of Type 1 diabetes I do not let it hold me back from achieving all of my goals.
