On Wednesdays on social media, people use the hashtag #WriterWednesday to chat about all things author, book and writing, including authors promoting their own work. As we love to support self-published authors, we thought we’d join in and we will be featuring a UK self-published author every Wednesday on the website.
This week, we met Paige Nicole Maltby to find out more.
Please tell us about yourself; when did you first become interested in writing?
I have always been an avid writer from a young age, partly because I was very interested in books. My family always encouraged me to write so that helped me to stay interested too. Over the years through college and university I have also studied Creative Writing and took interest in English, so writing has always been something which I gravitated towards.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote so many stories as a child but I remember there was a point when I was around six or seven when I wrote and illustrated a whole series of books about my favourite teddy bear – sure my parents still have them somewhere!
What genre/genres do your books fall under?
I write a variety of genres, basically whatever I’m feeling and get an idea for at the time, but at the moment I am very much into Science Fiction and I’ve been writing and reading a-lot of that. I also write romance into a-lot of my work, because I feel it adds an interesting dynamic.
What is your latest book called, what is it about and what was the inspiration behind the book?
My most recent book is actually a poetry collection titled Outgrown, which is available from Amazon. It’s made up of poems which I wrote whilst in my first year of University revolving around heartbreak and outgrowing a relationship, accompanied with art from many talented artist friends.

Besides your current book, do you have any new projects coming up?
I am currently studying for a Masters in Creative Writing so I am always writing at the moment, but I am mostly focusing on a novel right now. So who knows, that might be available soon, depending on how things go!
Where can people find your books?
People can find Outgrown on Amazon: OUTGROWN: A Poetry Collection.
What has been the greatest moment in your writing career?
I think it’s a tie between getting a First in my degree and also publishing my first collection, as my degree felt very official and publishing my collection was very personal, as it helped me realise I have moved on from that stage in my life and can now share my work!
Besides writing, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy in your spare time?
I’m very interested in video editing which I personally count as a hobby, as I make video content every week. It’s not really something that I am doing in aims of getting anywhere career wise, but it’s very fun and I have definitely noticed improvement!
Which novelists do you admire?
I admire a lot of novelists, some personal favourites being Haruki Murakami, Sally Rooney and Matthew Dicks. Something about the way they write their characters and relationships really intrigues me. I also really love Mallory Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses series, can never fail to make me cry and is such a brilliant book.
What has been the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?
The best writing advice I have had is to know everything about the characters and their world, but not to stress about getting every detail in, as the details will come through gradually without you even noticing.
Do you have any tips or advice for other indie authors?
I would say to write for you, not for a specific audience or what you think people want to read. Writing for yourself is so important as otherwise it just becomes a chore, and writing should be fun.
