On Wednesdays on social media, people use the hashtag #WriterWednesday to chat about all things author, book and writing, including authors promoting their own work. As we love to support self-published authors, we thought we’d join in and we will be featuring a UK self-published author every Wednesday on the website.
This week, we met Ross Watt to find out more.
Please tell us about yourself; when did you first become interested in writing?
To be honest I’ve always been interested in reading and telling stories, but the rules with writing always frustrated me. It wasn’t until recently after discussing ideas I had with a published author that they challenged me to write 3000 words in two weeks. I realised I was interested when I wrote 3500 in one week and wasn’t close to finishing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don’t remember the first story I ever wrote but this is the first time in memory that I think I’ve put full effort into the beginning, middle and end. Instead of just having a really good introduction and then rushing everything else.
What genre/genres do your books fall under?
Sci-fi and mythology I would say, I’ve always really liked stories about different pantheons etc and twisting original ideals about stories. Where Disney like to get a dark Grimm story and make it digestible for kids I like to try and do the opposite.
What is your latest book called, what is it about and what was the inspiration behind the book?
It’s called Lobster and it’s about a character who makes a deal with a Mayan God to get revenge on the killer who murdered his love. The inspiration was basically just wanting to add my own twist and meaning to a revenge story we’ve all heard a thousand times.

Besides your current book, do you have any new projects coming up?
I do, I’m currently adapting Lobster into a comic and also I am planning on writing an anthology of short stories within the same universe all under the same theme.
Where can people find your books?
If you search Lobster and Ross Watt on Amazon it will come up there or I also sell a digital copy on Ko-Fi if you search for ADHDnMe.
What has been the greatest moment in your writing career?
To be honest the total surprise to myself that I actually completed a project within a reasonable timeframe.
Besides writing, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy in your spare time?
I run a website for people with ADHD and I write poetry which I put on there as well, the rest of the time it’s either work, kids or golf.
Which novelists do you admire?
I’ve always really liked Irvine Welsh and would love to write colloquially but not sure how to even begin to unravel the rules I dislike so much but are engrained in me.
What has been the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?
Write everything you can then edit after, don’t edit as you go because you’ll never finish it.
Do you have any tips or advice for other indie authors?
Find honest friends, give them the progress as it goes and if it’s interesting to them they’ll give you the motivation to continue.
You can find out more about Ross and his books via Amazon, Ko-fi, TikTok or X (Twitter).
