Independent business: Soap & Pamper

Hi, my name is Debs and I make luxurious vegan friendly soaps, shampoo bars, deodorants and lip balms. My products are made with skin and hair loving ingredients which are 100% natural and palm oil free meaning they are kind to the skin and kind to the environment.

I have always had an interest in products which use natural ingredients and have been using essential oils for at least 25 years. I still prefer using a touch of Lavender and Peppermint on my temples to ease a headache or a tummy massage of Clary Sage and Rose Geranium to help relieve menstrual cramps or crankiness! When I was still teaching I even used them in the classroom to help reduce stress and tension during the exam seasons.

Making soaps was John’s idea. John is my soulmate and best friend. We romantically hand make each other a gift at Christmas and this particular year I made John some aftershave and he made me some soap, it was beautiful. After I left teaching in 2015 I was unsure what I wanted to do and he suggested I make some soap to give me something to do in the meantime. This was where my passion for soaps started. I started to research how soap is made and soon learnt that many commercially made soaps have all the naturally produced glycerine, which moisturises the skin, removed and sold to cosmetic companies to make moisturisers. This makes the soap very drying to the skin which results in us buying the moisturiser to give the skin back what the soap has taken out! I was dumbfounded, a pure profit making practice right under my nose!! This propelled me into looking at the properties of numerous oils and butters, how they benefited the skin, what they contributed to the soap and why you needed a balanced proportion of them in the soap. A year later, after more research and more practice soap making I had my first set of soap safety tested and ready to sell. Since then I have expanded and created a second range of soaps, a set of shampoos, lip balms and most recently deodorants. I have kept to my ethos of ‘all natural’ and all my products are vegan friendly.

As well as the soaps being natural and environment friendly I wanted the packaging of my soaps to be as ‘green’ as possible. Soaps and shampoos are wrapped in paper, the deodorants are in cardboard tubes and the lip balms are in aluminium tins. I use recycled boxes where possible to post or re use envelopes. This means that the packaging may differ slightly from order to order, but rest assured the quality of the product will remain the same.
