Music interview: Nanuk

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Nottingham singer Nanuk to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Nottingham and have always been obsessed with music ever since I was 11 when one night my dad brought home a keyboard a friend had given him. One night I was in front of the tv and started somehow copying the advert melodies on the keyboard. I was hooked.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up it was everything I could listen to. I found myself gravitating towards guitar led bands and music. Crowded House, Cream and especially Queen as that was all my family played in the house.

Now I love acts like Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Luke Sital-Singh and Nick Mulvey.

How would you describe your sound?
I would say Folk / singer songwriter.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release Midas is all about being there for each other especially when you’re feeling vulnerable. Which i suppose is very relevant with the world the way it is at the moment.

What’s your local music scene like?
Good and thriving when things are normal. Everyone seems supportive.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Next 12 months will hopefully see one more single then Ep. Followed by hopefully lots of live performances.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Bon Iver or Sufjan Stevens without a doubt… or even some huge producer like Brian Ebony just to see what happens.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Not really pretty boring apart from the occasional broken string and once I ripped my trousers on stage.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
My music is honest, and I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok. But if you do like well, welcome on board 🙂 oh and also my name comes from the film The Lost Boys. But where in the film?
