Music interview: Hannah Brine

(C) Eleanor Whibley

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned London based singer Hannah Brine to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Leicester and I started singing along to the radio when I was about 12 – auditioned for the school choir, and the rest is history – started gigging at 15 and my journey has seen me conduct choirs, perform on Strictly Come Dancing, sing on dance records, and write my own music, which is my true passion.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Carole King, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Inara George, Gregory Porter.

How would you describe your sound?
Classic song, with a twist of folk.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
When You Don’t Speak to Me – classic country, think Tammy Wynette, Emmylou Harris.

What’s your local music scene like?
I’m in London so we are spoiled for music from around the world – I watched Congolese music last Wednesday, blues on Saturday, and my choir on Tuesday – it’s rich and varied and given the toughest year with Covid for musicians, we need to celebrate and support as much as we can.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
So much! Gigging, writing, recording. I don’t stop. A live premiere of the music I created for my choirs over the last 12 months which we recorded virtually, but we will be able to come together in the same room to sing together.

Here are some of the pieces I composed.
