Music interview: Lux Alma

(C) Hazel Coonagh

Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with unsigned UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with unsigned Dublin based singer Lux Alma to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Kerry and have been playing the keyboard since I was a child. I studied music and then did a masters in sound design. I’m now a full time sound designer for theatre and film and I also perform as Lux Alma which is an Electro Folk act. I meld sound and music in all my work and draw in elements of the natural world into my music.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I loved The Beatles and the Beach Boys. The combo of rich harmonies and experimental recording techniques was my jam even at age 7/8. And these days I’ll still go back to them time and again. I also can’t get enough of Villagers, Saint Sister, Roisin Murphy and Kate Bush.

How would you describe your sound?
It’s got a dreamy quality with lots of rich sound elements, but always with rich vocal harmonies too. And there’s quite often a banging synth in there 🙂

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
It’s called To The Sea and was released on Friday 9th July. During lockdown, I was stuck in Dublin, pining for the Atlantic where I grew up. I spent hours trawling the coast on Google satellite view and realised there was so much of my home that i’d never even visited. So as soon as lockdown lifted, I hit the road. I started at the south border and visited every inlet and bay that i could access – 86 in total! At each stop I made a sound recording and when i got back to Dublin, I folded them into a song. Every instrument in this piece is made from the ocean. Every cymbal is the crash of a wave and the synths all have sea impulses at their core, and you can even hear my dad laughing and joking too! The whole piece is an ode to the ocean – it’s a digital shell to hold to your ear when you’re missing the sea.

What’s your local music scene like?
I’m based in Dublin and have some wonderful musical friends! I’m also an occasional session musician so i’m lucky to hang out with lots of different musicians and play lots of different styles. Everyone is super encouraging and friendly – it’s a great gang!

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I’ve really connected with To The Sea so I’m going to begin creating other tracks in a similar fashion. It’ll involve some tripping around the country and hopefully some great collaborations along the way!

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Villagers would be a dream. And Saint Sister as well. The dreamy harmonies would be off the charts!

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Gosh, it’s been so long with lockdown that they’ve all blurred into one wistful gig! Hoping to create some new hilarious stories as soon as we can get back gigging safely!

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That my music is a little different, because of the way I weave real sounds through it. It’s full of heart and full of things I care about.
