What was the inspiration behind the album?
The St Buryan Sessions were filmed and recorded live (with no audience due to COVID-19) on 1 July 2020 in the beautiful church of St Buryan, Cornwall, parts of which date back to the 11th century. The idea was to recreate the energy, heart, soul and magic of a live performance in a quality production that would stand the test of time, with ambient mics placed around the soaring space to capture the building’s gorgeous natural acoustic.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the album?
Yes — it was entirely due to the pandemic that I had the time and motivation to record it, and raised the money for it through crowdfunding after my tours were cancelled due to Covid.
How long did the album take to create from start to finish?
The actual recording took place on one day — 1 July 2020 — but the whole process of putting the album together has taken over a year, starting at the end of March 2020 when I had to dash home 2 weeks into a 2-month tour because of Covid.
Which track was written first?
Most of the tracks on the album are revisits of songs I’ve recorded previously. One of them “Charlie’s Gone Home”, was recorded originally on my very first album back in 1997 and was written even earlier than that.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
I love all the tracks — I guess The Sun Goes On Rising would be a favourite.
Were any tracks difficult to write?
They were all difficult to write! Songwriting is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but also one of the most rewarding.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
Tours in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland and the USA.
Genre: Folk, Alternative, Singer-Songwriter
Released: 15th October 2021
