What was the inspiration behind the album?
I collected some 18th and 19th century Scottish songs that I love and reimagined them in contemporary jazzy settings. Also wrote a song in similar vein and created the tune for another.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the album?
Oh yes… it was very much stop, start – working on it whenever restrictions allowed.
How long did the album take to create from start to finish?
From identifying the musicians and confirming/writing the songs, around 18 months.
Which track was written first?
Most of the tracks are arrangements of traditional songs. Probably ‘I Know Where I’m Going’ was first to bed down.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
I love ‘Island Spinning Song’ that I used to sing in primary school and ‘Fly We to Some Desert Isle’ that just makes me feel happy!
Were any tracks difficult to write?
The title track, ‘My Scottish Heart’ had many forms before I settled on what’s on the album.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
I’m working with another musician on a collection of songs from Paisley, my home town. We plan to debut this as part of a new festival at the end of September.
