What was the inspiration behind the album?
The main objective for this album was for it to be its own thing and not just follow the first album. So I ditched the acoustic for electric guitar, changed producers and started pushing my writing in a different direction. I was heavily influenced by artists like Ben Howard, Radiohead and Keaton Henson around this time and that pushed the music in a more ambient and electronic direction.
How long did the album take to create from start to finish?
I pretty much started working on ‘Wither & Bloom’ when I had finished recording the first album. We started recording towards the end of summer 2016 and had everything wrapped up by Christmas.
Which track was written first?
I think the first track I wrote for this album was ‘Time Cannot Replace’.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
‘Time Cannot Replace’ is definitely my favourite track. That song is still a regular track in my set and it works well on electric or stripped back on an acoustic guitar.
Were any tracks difficult to write?
I seem to recall ‘Skin & Bone’ being fairly difficult. To be honest I think it shows. As an artist you can listen back when some time has passed and really rip things to bits. I don’t hate it but I don’t love it. But I think it’s good to acknowledge your growth as a writer and see it as a stepping stone to somewhere else.
