What was the inspiration behind the EP?
We had already released a few singles since relocating to London and wanted to release an EP. We had three of the songs written, set the recording dates at our favourite studio in Liverpool, The Cabin, and then wrote ‘Saturday Morning’ days before the sessions began as an answer to the lyrical themes in ‘Tears In The Rain’, which tied the EP together nicely. The title song’s guitar riff was inspired by the distortion we got from plugging a guitar directly into an old tape machine in the studio.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the EP?
Luckily we recorded and released our Truth Comes Out EP before COVID-19 existed. It would have been much more challenging to complete under the pandemic circumstances. We did manage to complete some projects during lockdown, however, including a video collaboration with Laura Oakes for our co-written single ‘Leave It Til Tomorrow’, a quirky music video for our single ‘When It Comes To Love’ and a reimagined version of our single ‘Dancing On The Floor’, all while performing regular ‘Sunday Sessions’ live stream concerts on our YouTube channel.
How long did the EP take to create from start to finish?
We recorded the four tracks over about six days. We had the songs written and demoed ahead of time, which saved time in the studio, so it was quite efficient. With mixing and mastering the whole process took about a month but it was all done fairly quickly, which we think adds to the cohesive sound.
Which track was written first?
‘Tears In The Rain’ was the first song we wrote and it was also recorded first along with the title track ‘Truth Comes Out’. It all began with the guitar part, which Obadiah stumbled upon in our living room one dark, winter afternoon. The guitar part created a solemn mood which inspired the lyrical story about heartbreak and longing.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
Obviously we love them all or we wouldn’t have included them but the title track ‘Truth Comes Out’ came together really well and the closing track ‘Rolling On’ is a personal favourite about overcoming life’s struggles one day at a time.
Were any tracks difficult to write?
Our memory is that all the songs came together quite quickly. They all started with an initial idea, whether it was a guitar part, a lyric or a melody, and once we had that essence we were away! But it did help that we had set ourselves a deadline by booking the studio time in advance, so that forced us to get the songs finished.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
Following our most recent single release ‘A Spark Away From Fire’, we are looking forward to touring again in 2022. We are also excited to work on recording new music towards another EP or debut album.
