What was the inspiration behind the EP?
In 2017 I decided to write, record and release (on Soundcloud) a new single every single month. By the mid-way point of the year, I decided to package them up and release the songs everywhere in EP format. This meant there would be two EP’s being released – ‘Feelings Aren’t Facts’ and then the later ‘Carrier Bag Your Career Is Over’ EP.
How long did the EP take to create from start to finish?
6 Months. This was the first half of the challenge of releasing a ‘New Single every Month’. You’ll notice that the EP only has 5 songs and not 6, which by 6 months it should have. The reason being was that the sixth song, ‘Dying to Stay Alive’, just didn’t work with the EP. I wasn’t totally happy with it sonically, and it didn’t work with the rest of the songs. I did later release ‘Dying to Stay Alive’ as a B-Side on my single ‘Trust the Autumn’ released in 2021.
Which track was written first?
Grape Juice.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
‘Grape Juice’ is cool and ‘This Song’s For You’ I like, but overall, in hindsight, I’d have liked to have edited and re-mixed some of the tunes. Writing, recording and releasing a song every month was a good challenge, but it left little time to refine the tracks, so when I listen back there are a lot of things I’d like to change!
Were any tracks difficult to write?
Another part of the challenge I set myself was to come at writing a song from different angles to what I normally would do. Ordinarily, I’d sit with my guitar, find a chord progression, then find a melody, write the lyrics and build it that way. On all these songs, I tried to make myself uncomfortable and challenge myself, so I was writing the bass lines first, or the lyrics first, or maybe even just a beat. So all of these factors made the songwriting a little difficult – but rewarding.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
A brand new album and lots more singles.
Genre: Indie-Pop, Indie-Folk, Indie-Rock
