What was the inspiration behind the album?
I like to tell stories about characters and they can be based on real-life people or something in my head that has been sparked by a comment someone has made. I couldn’t possibly pin down one source of inspiration, I try to take in everything around me and someone might just flick that switch. Whether it be a football game, a strange saying someone makes in earshot, or even just a couple of words that sound good together.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the album?
The pandemic has affected everything, even now we’re generally back to living relatively normal lives so to say it wasn’t affected by the pandemic would be false. Elements of the lyrics and state of mind at the time certainly were affected by the pandemic but the majority of the songs came after restrictions had been lifted.
How long did the album take to create from start to finish?
Writing and recording wise, not particularly long. I had a very creative period when a number of the songs came at once and I tend to be a fast worker.
Which track was written first?
Devil in the Detail was written shortly after my EP came out in late 2021 and the rest of the tracks followed in 2022. It’s probably the track on the album that could’ve sat on the EP without standing out. I don’t think any others on Mirror, Mirror would fit the timbre of my Echo Chamber EP.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
My personal favourite is Wonder in the Morning After. I love the way the song builds up to the instrumental outro. I’m particularly pleased with how I got the keyboard and the lead guitar to sync without really trying! I wouldn’t say it’s the best track on the album but it’s a personal highlight.
Were any tracks difficult to write?
Most songs have difficult moments. Even something like Please Sincerely Mr Jones and Guardian Angel which came to me very quickly; required moments of pause to think things through a little.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
The focus is promoting this album for the time being and that will hopefully include some live shows. I’ve not played any of my solo stuff live before so that is something I want to do towards the latter half of the year.
