What was the inspiration behind the EP?
The EP is the first part in a series of short collaborative EP’s that Chef The Rapper will release that are centered around the 4 elements; Water, Earth, Air and Fire. Each EP will see Chef choose a collaborator to work with and they will explore emotions that are attached to the energies these elements represent. In My Element: Water represents the flow of our emotions through heartbreak, love and healing. Water is powerful and can be represented by peaceful lakes, or crashing rapids, just as our emotions can ebb and flow throughout love. This EP takes the listener through the trials and tribulations of intimacy.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the EP?
The pandemic severely affected the EP as it was actually recorded in 2020 and was put on the back burner until it could be released at a date where live shows were viable.
How long did the EP take to create from start to finish?
Recording and writing took place in December 2020.
Mixing and mastering took place over the entirety of 2021/22.
Release in 2023 equalling a 2 year 2 month process to complete the project.
Which track was written first?
Love You Now was written first. It also received BBC Introducing Track of the Week upon release, gaining airplay on BBC Radio 1.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
Last Time I Checked is a personal favourite as it was the most difficult combining so many vocals and also being the first song I executive produced on the EP. It was my goal to blend the voices together in a way that felt smooth but also displayed a disparity between one and another. The artists were also unsure about it until we completed the mix and it received critical acclaim on BBC 6 Radio and BBC Scotland.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
I am releasing a single every month for the next 12 months and I have a headline show at the famed King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut for the Summer Nights Festival on Friday August 11th.
