Music interview: Joey O’Gorman

Every Monday I will be bringing you an interview with an unsigned music artist. This week, I caught up with Dublin based artist Joey O’Gorman to find out more…

Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Ballincollig in Cork. I’ve always been obsessed with music, especially rap, but it wasn’t till I was in my 20’s I realised I could get involved in making music. I started a production course and got help from a friend to make beats on Ableton, eventually doing a full degree in music production in Dublin which I’ve just finished.

Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, Kid Cudi especially which are still my favourites – and recently The Beatles has maybe topped all that.

How would you describe your sound?
Alternative rap, sticking to the traditional rap structure mostly but using live instruments or instrument software like guitars/piano/orchestral sounds.

What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Weight Of The World EP.

What’s your local music scene like?
To be honest I’m not really involved locally but I’d like to be. I got into collaborations through an Asher Roth Discord server which let me find people to work with overseas mostly.

What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I’m going to be releasing another EP but it’ll be in a rock/pop style rather than rap – it was recorded all live with some musician friends and the singer is Marcus Smith from Cleveland.

Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Locally Kojaque and overseas someone like Danny Brown.

Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
None yet I’ve never performed live.

What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m also available to mix and master for others, I’ve mixed and mastered my own projects and I’m starting to do so for other artists too. This is a platform where I can be booked as a mixing engineer (JOEY59 gives 59% off).
