Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Sheringham artist Paul Thompson to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from a small seaside town called Sheringham, in Norfolk. I started playing acoustic guitar and also wrote poetry… eventually these became songs, I performed a few open mic nights which went down well, and started getting some paid gigs.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
The 60s singer-songwriters like Nick Drake, John Martyn, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor were all big influences. Currently, I like listening to bands such as Iron and Wine and Jack Johnson.
How would you describe your sound?
Wistful, poetic, and dreamy acoustic music.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Baby Hedgehog (new album due out 4th May). The title-track was inspired by finding an injured hedgehog that I nursed back to health.
What’s your local music scene like?
Norwich has some great bands and independent venues, such as The Arts Centre, and the Waterfront.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Tour with new album.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
James Taylor.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I once fell of a stool while playing live in a coffee shop (and I hadn’t even been drinking!).
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I have a Guinness World Record for the Longest Journey by Electric Milk Float… after touring to the Edinburgh Fringe in a milk float I used as an outdoor stage (over 1,000 miles travelled at a top speed of 15mph!).
