Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Worcester artist Sophie Gilbert to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Based in the West Midlands, I have been singing for over 10 years and released my first single in 2019. Which amassed success with multiple BBC radio plays. In 2024 I am aiming to release a new single every month.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Soul, jazz, rnb and pop influences. I’m currently trying to find my sound so I’m exploring with multiple different genres! I have done dance, rnb, hip hop and pop. Next month I will be releasing an 80’s inspired synth pop song, similar to the likes of Dua Lipa’s sound.
How would you describe your sound?
Relatable and unique (you never know what sound sonically you will get next!).
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
‘The Plan’ is the name of my latest single and after going through a tough time with my confidence and self image I decided to write a song in order to remind myself who I really am and to never give up on my dreams. It’s for anyone who has felt like the underdog – underestimated and told they will never achieve anything. It has beautiful melodic rnb vocals with a cinematic and dramatic hip hop beat. Sounding similar to ‘The Hills’ by The Weeknd and ‘BBHMM’ by Rihanna.
What’s your local music scene like?
Not as many opportunities as the big city.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Release a new single every month of the year.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
I collaborate regularly with German dance producer ‘Max Dawn’ who is also amazing at what he does.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I’ve been given money when busking by Nick Knowles and Maisie Peters!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I am extremely passionate about my work and creating songs people emotionally relate to. I want to build an amazing community surrounding and supporting independent artists as I believe there is so much talent around.
