Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with London band SUPERSAURUS to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
We’re a band from Clapham in London, but are from all over the place originally. Benji and Bec know each other from home in Yorkshire and we met Tay and Lauren through social media. We spent ages coming up with the name, Lauren came up with it as a way to try and take the piss out of Benji being obsessed with dinosaurs but it stuck.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We all love 80s pop music which is what brought us all together musically. That, and mid 2000s pop-rock. We’re also pretty influenced by 80s film music like Vangelis which inspires a lot of our synth parts. At the minute, artists we look up to are MUNA, Boygenius, and Holly Humberstone.
How would you describe your sound?
Mid 2000s pop rock with 80s indie instrumentation.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Wish I Never Met You was written in about 40 minutes after I (Benji) saw some stuff on social media I didn’t mean or want to see. It is one of those tracks that captures exactly how I was feeling in a moment but isn’t strictly how I feel in general. I didn’t actually wanna use the song but Lauren talked me into it! Musically, it’s in the same vein as Kid Laroi’s/Justin Bieber’s “STAY”.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We have an alternate version of Wish I’d Never Met that is due to be released on 12th April! Plus gigs around the country and another single towards the end of the year.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Robert Smith!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Mainly just me (Benji) playing shows with various different injuries – I’m very accident prone. We have a bit of fun rearranging, adding/changing parts to our set without pre-warning other members and then we have to just wing it at the gig.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That we’re a great live band. We really pride ourselves on our live performance, like any band would say, we’re better live than on record. It’s the part we love about the job the most and the part we want our fans to enjoy the most too.
