Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with London band goldenbloom to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
I (Jordan) and Will the guitarist had met in a backing band for a mutual friend of ours. When that run its course we decided to try out a new, heavier more punk focussed band. We recruited Justas, the drummer who I’d actually worked with as at a game publishing company. We then recruited Johnny on bass originally as a session player but we gelled so well we asked him to be full time shortly after.
We came up with the name the day before recording our first EP. It’s when Justas and I went to see Jeff Goldblum play in Shoreditch. We also got to meet him. He’s a top bloke and thought we’d immortalise the moment by naming the band after him.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I loved Eiffel 65 and Vengaboys. These days it’s more around the post-punk revival. IDLES are a huge influence. Also Death From Above 1979 and Queens of the Stone Age.
As for the rest of the band, Justas bases his drumming on John Bonham from Zepplin. Johnny loves indie and Will loves Carly Rae Jepsen.
How would you describe your sound?
Hard and fast. Angry probably. I think there’s a lot of angst in our songs.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
We released HEating on the 6th of March. The song’s basically written about the cost of living crisis and how stupid it’s getting. I think some clip came up on Instagram from someone calling in on LBC. The guy was in complete despair, low income, living by themselves. Petrified with the latest increase to cost of living. The bloke’s literally in tears trying to work out how to make life work. It really struck a chord with me.
What’s your local music scene like?
Brilliant. East-London is up there with the Brighton music scene. Grass roots venues like The Engine Rooms in Bow are really doing bits to keep this scene up there with the rest of them.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Plan is to polish off an EP and get some festival slots.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Probably Carly Rae Jepsen just so Will will stop bothering her.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
More of a tip: Don’t drink the green room dry of beer just before you go on stage.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We do weddings and bar mitzvahs.
