Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Killiney artist Peter Richardson to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Killiney, Dublin and have been into music as long as I can remember. I was raised in a very musical household, both my parents are incredibly passionate about music and so I was raised on a constant diet of their favourite music ever since I was young. I remember they would get me and my sister to perform for everyone and anyone who came along to the house, and we developed a knack for it then! I started writing songs properly then when I was about 14/15, and have never looked back.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up I was hugely influenced by my dad’s cd collection, I remember he’d let me stay up late some nights listening to his favourite and I loved it. There was a bit of everything in there, a lot of Johnny Cash, Randy Newman, Declan O’Rourke and Paul Brady, and he’s the one who introduced me to Fleet Foxes’ first album. To this day Fleet Foxes are probably my favourite artist and one of my biggest inspirations, along with other favourites like Hozier, Bon Iver, Lorde, Nick Mulvey, Ben Howard and The Staves.
How would you describe your sound?
If Hozier, Noah Kahan and Tom Odell had a baby and then broke up with him.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called “Better Alone” and just released in April! It’s a song about trying to stay optimistic in the face of loss, about looking forward and hoping that although it hurts, maybe it will be what’s best for you after all.
What’s your local music scene like?
I guess my local music scene is Dublin as a whole and in that case it could be better. There’s so many fantastic independent artists around and with the amount of great small venues in the city, always a gig worth checking out every week.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Lots. Myself and the band are headlining The Grand Social this Friday, and after that it’ll be straight back to the studio. I’ve been working on a whole new body of music over the last two years to bring me into the next chapter, the first of which was “Better Alone”, and there’s tonnes more to come that I can’t wait to share.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
More than I can name!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Me and the boys once opened for “The Wibbly Wobbly Circus” at a festival. Slightly different vibes now but to be fair to them they had a surprising few bangers in the back pocket. Who doesn’t love a good balloon animal.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We’re only getting started.
