Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Bristol based artist Amelle Rose to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I was born and raised in Northern France and I’ve always had a creative streak growing up. I really enjoyed writing stories in my early teens, so my mum enrolled me in a beginner’s songwriting workshop when I was 13. I wrote my first song there and all of us got to perform our creations in front of our friends and families, and that’s when I truly fell in love with making music. Around that time, I got my first guitar and taught myself how to play through YouTube tutorials and I’ve not stopped writing since!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I was a massive Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift fan growing up! Like a hardcore level fan haha. My parents both were always music fans too and this is something I really got to share particularly with my mum as I got a bit older – she’s introduced me to a lot of music I still love to this day! Nowadays, I’d say my taste in music is pretty eclectic, but I’m very influenced by female-led indie-rock acts such as Boygenius, Daughter or Ethel Cain.
How would you describe your sound?
Dramatic, melancholic and maximalist indie-rock.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest single is called ‘Congratulations’ and I wrote it while I was in the pits of postpartum depression. Becoming a mother has been the greatest blessing in my life, but I found the first year extremely difficult for my sense of self. I felt like through becoming somebody else’s ‘all’, I had lost myself. I’m in a much better place now, and I wish I could show my past self that while I did have to grieve my old life, this doesn’t mean I wouldn’t find a new middle ground that does fulfil me in all aspects of my (new) life.
What’s your local music scene like?
Everyone is so talented, friendly and supportive! I love it here, feels very different to how things were when I lived in London.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
More music coming up!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Elena Tonra from Daughter is one of my favourite lyricists, I’d love to get an opportunity to pick her brain. I’d also love to work with Florence Welch.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I recently dropped my guitar on stage twice in a row. The crowd stayed completely quiet about it haha, that felt pretty embarrassing!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
In the age of TikTok marketing’s emphasis on relatability, I just hope my music serves as a reflection of the depth and diversity of the human experience. I feel that way about the music I listen to too: You don’t have to get it to enjoy it.
