Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Newport artist Josh Hicks to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Newport, South Wales. After attending ACM in Guildford, where I gained a First in vocal performance, I entered the Open Mic UK competition in 2021 and won the overall competition, against 10k other entries (previous winners include Birdy and Lola Young). I have also worked with Emeli Sandé on a past yet to be released single!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up the 80’s were big for me as that’s what my parents seemed to listen to, such as; Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Queen. Then as I grew up and my tastes matured I started to enjoy artists like Billie Holiday, Lauryn Hill, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Adele just to name a few!
How would you describe your sound?
A concoction of Pop, Soul, Jazz and R&B maybe even a hit of funk in some songs.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called ‘Honest’. There were only two artists I had in mind for this influence, they are; SZA and Lost Girl with her track ‘trust issues’.
What’s your local music scene like?
Local music scene is super supportive! That being said at the moment I find pop music especially to be quite lacklustre. The sole focus in wales seems to be more a Indie, Alternative, rock and folk music. However, we push on even harder us pop artists!!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Ooh I’m talking to a few friends about something special soon but until the plans are solidified I’ll refrain from saying anything at the moment! However, an acoustic EP is in the planning stages at the moment but no dates that I can give you as of yet!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
There’s a few, Raye, Mark Ronson, Joy Crookes, Cole Porter and Billie Holiday if those two were still alive!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I believe from what others have said to me off stages, the funny things tend to come out of my mouth apparently!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I want people to enjoy my music! If not now but one day in the future, I want them to feel a sense on magic when listening to my music. It’s exactly how I used to feel when I listened to music as a kid. A sense that the impossible is possible!!
Upcoming live dates and performances
19th July, performing with my band to support for an artist called Helena May at the Moon Cardiff.
