Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Liverpool based artist Lucy Starr to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am originally from East Riding of Yorkshire! I now live in Liverpool! My mum used to sing songs to me when I was younger and I loved nursery rhymes and Disney songs growing up! I also taught myself guitar when I was 14 and I have regularly performed on stage since age 17 so the past decade of my life!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Avril Lavigne, Leona Lewis, Paramore etc.
How would you describe your sound?
Indie rock/alternative with honest lyrics and ethereal vocals to capture the raw emotion. My themes are usually about break ups and I like to be empowering in the songs too.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Darkness is my latest release. It is influenced by being in a toxic relationship and knowing that you need to walk away from that person but battling with yourself (cognitive dissonance) because you see the light in all their darkness (as the lyrics go).
What’s your local music scene like?
Liverpool is amazing for music! There are some incredible venues here like The Cavern Club, EBGBs, M&S Bank Arena etc!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Hayley Williams or Avril Lavigne!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I once went busking in Sheffield and a man started filming and interviewing me. Mid-sentence, my guitar strap broke and whacked me square in the face hahaha.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I was an incredibly shy child and I could not even sing in front of my mum. I now regularly perform to 100s- 1000s of people. Always believe in yourself and your dreams!
