Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Brighton based artist DanFromUpstairs to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Originally from SE London. From about the age of 4, I was forced into piano lessons by my dad, an avid player who plays on average about 6 hours a day. I didn’t stick with it for that long, but it did ignite something in me. Fast forward a few years, and I have interests in playing drums, guitar, song writing and music production!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
When I was young, a lot of it was based on tapes we had in the car, which were random bits of shrapnel from my mum’s younger years; The Beatles, The B-52s, Talking Heads, Simon & Garfunkel.
Nowadays, I’m excited by anything I feel pushes the boat out, like Aphex Twin or Sphongle. My favourite contemporary artists are Magdalena Bay, Black MIDI, Sampha and Kendrick Lamar.
How would you describe your sound?
Cerebral, clinical, absorbing.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Cupid’s Error – The influence being bad relationships.
What’s your local music scene like?
I attend a lot of local jam sessions, which is a great way to hang out and meet other musicians. Also, lots of interesting small acts passing through Brighton that are far more interesting or eclectic than the run of the mill industry plants!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Release my debut album in October. Then, improve my singing as I want to sing on my next album.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Aesop Rock.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
My album that’s coming out on October 18th is a piece of my soul and is an artistic experience that has transitions between songs to create one continuous trippy experience.
