Every Monday I will be bringing you an interview with an independent band, duo or music artist. This week, I caught up with Liverpool based artist Joanna to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m a singer-songwriter, originally from Greece/Albania, based in Liverpool, UK. My first steps in music started at the age of ten, and since then I have never stopped singing and writing lyrics. My songwriting includes lyrics in English, Greek and Albanian.
The hugest step for me entering music was my participation to The X Factor Albania in 2014 where I made it up to the Judges House.
After the X Factor I started engaging more professionally with music.
Member of many pop/pop soul/pop jazz bands as a front vocalist in the past in Greece and then in Liverpool, when I moved to the UK, performing in different live music events.
At the moment, I perform as a solo artist mainly focusing on live events and discography.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Whilst growing up I used to listen mainly to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Louis Armstrong, Ben E. King, Édith Piaf, James Brown, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Sinéad O’Connor. After personalities like Norah Jones, Diana Krall and Seal shaped my music preferences.
How would you describe your sound?
I’m an artist blending mainly music genres of pop, soul and jazz.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
‘Strong Enough’ is my latest song released on 14th March 2024. The music composition and the whole production of the song has been made from the music producer based in London MoseleyNoise influenced mainly from pop music blending the sound of live instruments.
The lyrics of the song have been co-written by me, in collaboration with MoseleyNoise.
‘Strong Enough’ is an uplifting pop song and the lyrics of the song could represent each one of us having inside us some kind of superpower enough to get us back on our feet – no matter how much people and life can cause us pain.
The song indeed confirms exactly the saying that “after the rain comes the sun”.
What’s your local music scene like?
The Liverpool music scene is getting stronger and more diverse now than it has ever been in the past. There is more and more space for solo artists, duos and bands representing different music genres giving their own touch and providing their own talent via different live events, local radios and local record labels. Each of them is like a piece of a jigsaw creating a whole puzzle of music here in Liverpool.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
A new music project is on the horizon! Very excited to be working on a new single.
It is a collaboration with a brilliant pop music producer from Liverpool, an interesting project which is going to be disclosed very soon on my socials.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
What I would say makes my music kind of special it’s the combination of my multicultural music background, something that I think listeners could notice straight away when listening to my songs.
