Every Monday I will be bringing you an interview with an independent band, duo or music artist. This week, I caught up with London artist Minimums to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Minimums is a secretive creative ego and has London as its spiritual home due to performing there and working with guest musicians based in the capital. I first got into music hearing film soundtracks and a mix of everything from Kraftwerk to Metallica as a kid.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I always enjoyed hearing electronic music when I was growing up – Leftfield, Royksopp, Orbital, Daft Punk and Faithless all got plenty of play on my CD walkman! Influences on Minimums include some of those alongside Hybrid, Jon Hopkins, Garbage, Sneaker Pimps and soundtracks by Clinton Shorter (The Expanse) and Sam Hulick – the latter of which kindly commented to say he liked my live cover of his Uncharted Worlds piece from the Mass Effect game series!
How would you describe your sound?
Music that you could expect to hear in the Belter space stations on The Expanse TV show!
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My most recent release is a track called Memory, which featured guest vocalist Pippa Sarratt. The release includes remixes from two amazing UK electronica artists – Michael Donoghue and Pulses. I also directed and edited a music video featuring New York based actress Carl Nowak. I’m really pleased with the reception it’s received and it’s a track that I have a special fondness for.
What’s your local music scene like?
Pretty good – there’s always plenty happening. I’m hoping to get more involved and see where that takes me.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
My creative output as Minimums encompasses the music as well as the visuals and videos I’ve been working on. The next planned release is a video for a track called Kopfkino, which was filmed the other week. After that I’ll be releasing the full EP alongside the next single and video – Fallen Further – before the year is out.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Hybrid – their music has been a huge influence on me since I was a student. It’s like a masterclass in how to create music that blends electronic elements, vocals and orchestral arrangements really well!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I recently did a show where I’d misplaced the MIDI cable for one of my small keyboards that I use to play the bass track on one of the songs. After the gig, another producer I know came up to say how he loved how I’d played the bass line on that track and how it sounded really tight. I felt I had to fess up that I’d done the gig with that part put back into the backing track and mimed along – shocking, I know!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
My real identity is… oh wait, it’s far too soon for that! But no, I’m not Thom Yorke, despite another reviewer recently coming to that conclusion!
