Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with West Midlands artist Matilda Pratt to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I am from Tamworth in the West Midlands, UK and I got into music through being a part of dance and drama companies, leading me to try out singing and I found that I really had a passion for performance, songwriting and putting my own ‘spin’ on covers.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Definitely Oasis, The Smiths, Radiohead, The Beatles – a lot of my parents’ music growing up has massively influenced the artist I am today and I still have a tonne of songs by these bands on my playlists. Now I really take my inspiration from these bands still, but also artists like Sam Fender, and also leaning into the Indie-Pop genre also, drawing on elements from Olivia Rodrigo etc that are super commercial also. I think my music is a nice fusion!
How would you describe your sound?
Indie-Pop… maybe more ‘indie’ than ‘pop’, but it really depends on the song. I take a lot of influences from my performing and writing out in Los Angeles, and I think that really dreamy sound is also prevalent in my music too.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
‘Burning Down a Home’ is my latest single and the inspiration is about being in a toxic relationship, where you know you aren’t right for each other, and any efforts to stay together is simply just ‘burning down a home’. Perhaps the fire and spark is still there, but it just isn’t healthy and it is quite a fiery (pardon the pun, haha) and empowering song I think which is really driven by the sound too.
What’s your local music scene like?
Birmingham is my local music scene and it is so great – I’ve played some super cool venues in the city and I love playing in a home crowd.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I would love to keep playing amazing local music venues across the UK – I love playing in front of new crowds and especially love playing in London, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as festivals, so really hope to play even more shows and festivals.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Omg I’m such a blabber hahahhaa, I’ve noticed that when I’m describing my songs and introducing them to audiences, I really talk to everyone like they are my best friends and I am so so honest! It gets quite a few laughs sometimes, but I’m truly myself when I’m on stage and clearly feel comfortable with the amazing people so that is always a plus!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Fun fact!! I actually studied Law at Oxford University and graduated last year!! I love when I can talk about this amazing experience because it really shows that you can absolutely do anything, music and academics!
