Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with London based band The Half Light to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
The Half Light are:
James Rogers – Vocals, Guitar
Guy Chapman – Guitar, Keys
James Morrison – Drums
Mike Taylor – Bass
James R and Guy met up over 10 years ago whilst both relatively new to London and started composing tracks together. Over time The Half Light has gone through some line up changes, with Mike joining 2015 and James M 2018. Although London based we all hail from different parts of the UK.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Myself (Mike) personally had varied influences growing up, mainly rooted around the parents’ car playlist of 80s Rock, New Wave & New Romantics. As a bassist my influences moved towards Funk (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jamiroquai) as well as Alt Rock & Metal (Muse, Radiohead, Metallica).
The band in general takes a lot of influence from The Smiths.
How would you describe your sound?
Twilight Pop.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our Latest EP is called “Stalking The Lanes”, with the songs seeing the band exploring new sonic territory, marrying lush orchestration, retro-future synths and tuned percussion to their trademark hooks and melodies.
What’s your local music scene like?
Being London means it’s very varied, but also means there is always somewhere for us to play our music to a receptive audience.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We have recently released merchandise to tie in with the “Stalking The Lanes” EP release,as well as a limited vinyl run that includes our latest EP as well as our previous EP, “Night On My Mind” (released in 2018). We will also be dropping some remixes which our very talented drummer has put together, so keep an eye out on our socials! New material is already in the works so from 2025 we will be working on those and looking ahead to Festival season.
