What was the inspiration behind the EP?
This was my first solo project so I wanted to do something a little different. It was written and recorded during the covid lockdown and whilst it’s not overtly prominent in the music, it did lend a weirder, claustrophobic edge to it. Two songs in particular, Echo Chamber and Bring in the Clown; were influenced by the state of politics and social media at the time. Echo Chamber certainly addresses how dangerous it is to fall into one way of thinking, something that’s amplified by the use of social media.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the EP?
Huge. For a start it gave me the time to write, record and mix the EP but as I said, the pandemic is a malevolent presence throughout the record.
How long did the EP take to create from start to finish?
Relatively quickly. The whole project was completed within a few months and the release was held until after the summer. I like to work quickly when I have the opportunity to do so. I’m not someone who thinks it’s healthy to become so engrossed, obsessed with the minutia of a record. It captures a moment in time.
Which track was written first?
Bring in the Clown was written first. It was written in mind for a release with my band Halloween Jack but I wanted to do something a little different so it kickstarted the whole solo project.
Were any tracks difficult to write?
Not particularly.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
I really enjoy Bring in the Clown from a mix perspective as I got that splashy reverb bass down nicely and the chorus part is very odd.
