Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Paisley artist Evelyn Laurie to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Paisley in Scotland and have been singing as long as I can remember! As a child, I use to be trotted out at family parties to sing “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”. At the end everyone would be crying so I grew up thinking music you like would make you cry!! As a teenager became painfully shy and as an adult sang in choirs. It wasn’t till much later in life (my 40’s) that I attended a jazz vocal workshop and got hooked – both on workshops and singing jazz. I call myself a ‘late bloomer’ ;o)
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Always singer songwriters – first album bought was James Taylor, followed by Simon and Garfunkel then later Joni Mitchell and John Martyn. I also developed a great liking for Led Zeppelin and opera! My tastes are very eclectic. I do love the jazz greats too though like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, Miles Davis. These days I still love a good melody and storyteller like Cécile McLorin Salvant, Kurt Elling and Goldfrapp!
How would you describe your sound?
It’s been described as smoky jazz club!
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
I’ve just released a cover of the song “Sympathy”. I’ve always found the lyrics moving and poignant – a call to humanity to do better. Like most of us I’m sad about the state of the world right now so it felt like the right time to release it. Music can be a powerful medium for change and also provide an outlet for people’s emotions and I’ve linked the release on Bandcamp to fundraising for Save the Children charity.
What’s your local music scene like?
Paisley has a great live music scene with several venues hosting bands regularly. There’s always something on and local talent is great. Afer all, Gerry Rafferty and Paolo Nutini are from here!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I’m recording a Christmas single that I’ve written and which I hope to get out in time!!
Also been working on an album of songs about my hometown Paisley’s rich history and stories, some original, some traditional, with another local musician which will be launched 21 November.
And, I’ve been writing and recording a collection of original songs on a theme for the past couple of years that I hope to get finished early next year and which will have an accompanying film… fingers crossed!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Brian Eno or Mark Ronson would be good… If they’re not available then, since I don’t play an instrument, it would be great to work with a pianist (or guitarist) on some songs.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Well, there was the time that we were positioned in a pub right in front of the disabled toilet and I had to keep stopping every time a lady wanted to use it…
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m a late bloomer! I don’t play an instrument but I write lyrics and create melodies and I’ve come to realise that that means I’m a songwriter. I like many genres although I do tend to put a jazzy spin on them.
