What was the inspiration behind the EP?
My day job is at Sheffield United FC and one of my ex colleagues (Ben Osborn) opened a bar with his business partner called Lonely Boy Bar, which is situated in Borrowash, Derby. When discussing it I said I’d write him a song for the bar, so I came up with ‘Lonely Boy’, which we both loved – him so much so that he has the lyrics from the tracks emblazoned in neon lettering on the wall in the bar. Lonely Boy triggered something in me and I had been looking for a subject matter for new material, so proposed that I write a full album! So, that’s what I’m doing. I came up with the concept of naming each track by someone’s name and collective they create a series of intertwining stories that explore each characters background – usually a path of struggle and resilience – and they’re connections to the bar and each other. Ultimately its a collection of stories that encourage the notion to ‘have faith in yourself to get up and start again’ and the bar provides a backdrop where hope can always spring eternal.
Did the pandemic have an impact when recording the EP?
No, I started writing these tracks afterwards.
How long did the EP take to create from start to finish?
I started Lonely Boy in the summer of 2023 and released the digital version in May 24. There has been 3 more releases in its wake over the summer to make up the current EP.
Which track was written first?
Lonely Boy.
Do you have any personal favourite tracks?
I love all of them. They all showcase different aspects of my songwriting strengths. I think they are all musical earworms and memorable in their own right. They all drive different emotions, but I really like the concept I’ve created on Murphy. Murphy for its endearing message of having faith in yourself to get up and start again but my favourite is Mary. It’s not as easily accessible to the listener as the others, and that’s by design. I want to challenge them to invest in the story because it’s quite harrowing, but celebrates her strength of character. In my opinion, it’s probably my finest moment so far in my career.
Were any tracks difficult to write?
These 4 tracks came quite easily. It was more getting the feel right with the mixes. There’s a lot of indie/alternative/rock bands out there doing their thing and it’s really great to see. My issue is that I’ve done all that in other bands when I was younger and at 45 years old can’t just replicate that youthful energy and observational lyrical content. I wanted to create something more reflective that would appeal and hit the audience in a different way, so the dynamics in the mixes needed a different approach. I think it sounds great, but you’ll never truly know until you cut the cord and let it exist outside of your own head.
What do you have coming up in the next 12 months?
‘Lonely Boy Bar Pt. 1’ is now out digitally across all streaming platforms. The Vinyl and CD versions are in production and fans can pre-order them now with an estimated release date of 7th December. Part 2 should land in Spring/Summer next year with singles being released intermittently on streaming services from the end of January in its build up. After that I’ll turn it into an album and add more tracks which will be released around this time next year. On the live front I’ve managed to re-establish myself with a full band this year so next year it’s about pushing that further and these tracks out to people that haven’t heard them. The live show has had a lot of work put into it so if you see LPMC on the bill anywhere, please come along – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
