Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with David from Cambridgeshire band Apteekii to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Came together in lockdown, I wanted to try and write a musical idea a day to try and stop boredom and be creative, and then wanted to try and finish some songs and recruited Matt and Mark. We had tried to make music together many years before, in fact we wrote the chords to The Rest Is Noise 10 years ago in those sessions! Apteekii comes from the Finnish work for Pharmacy, at the time making music was a medicine for us.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
The Beatles, Steven Wilson, Radiohead, Japanese House, Billie Eillish… all fairly stable between the both but lots of nu metal and pop punk too!
How would you describe your sound?
Mostly chilled thoughtful pop.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
“The Rest Is Noise”. A love song but maybe to the slightly more obsessive “Every Breath You Take” end of the spectrum. “I know you and I know we should be together, even though we’ve never met”. Bit creepy, but then so was Every Breath… and yet people still think it’s a sappy love song. More generously, it could be about a very strong connection which powers over all others. For some reason it stuck out to us as suiting a duet with Claudia. Perhaps fittingly, we’ve never met her!
What’s your local music scene like?
Great! Lucky with local radio and some people really championing the scene. Venues could be more plentiful but…
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
EP coming out in summer! Finally!!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree / Thom Yorke / Japanese House
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We have only ever had one live show! I work touring with other artists so am away half the year. Mark works as a video game caster so is away working the other half of the year. Matt now lives in Scotland which is quite far away…
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I am awful at this question!
You can find out more about Apteekii via Apple Music, Facebook, Instagram, SoundCloud, Spotify or YouTube.
