Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Southampton based artist The Cult of Seren to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I was born in London but grew up in the New Forest. I have been into music for as long as I can remember. My mum took me to piano lessons when I was young and my dad would always get me and my brother to listen to CDs of his favourite songs.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
When I was younger, I had a significant emo phase, so bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco and Boys Like Girls inspired me to learn to play guitar and piano. More recently however, the artists I feel most inspired by are Taylor Swift, ABBA and Ethel Cain (an odd mix I know).
How would you describe your sound?
I listen to a lot of artists so my sound changes a lot. It depends of who inspires me when I’m writing. My most recent song ‘Women Are A Work Of Art’ was written when I was listening to a lot of Taylor Swift so it has more of a pop feel to it.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called ‘Women Are A Work Of Art’. A lot of the lyrics are taken from my angst filled diary from when I was a teenager. It was inspired by the anger I felt as I realised that society treated women and their bodies as fashion trends, meaning it is almost impossible to look ‘how you are meant to’. I wrote it to counteract the ever changing expectations society puts on women to look a certain way.
What’s your local music scene like?
There’s plenty of venues in Southampton like The Brook, Engine Rooms and 1865. I mainly travel to see concerts and festivals with friends. It’s a small but passionate music scene.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I have lots of songs written and ready to be recorded so I will be focused on getting those out there.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
For the last couple of years in a row, I’ve been in the top 0.001% of ABBA listeners so my dream is to do a song with them.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That I write all my own songs. A lot of them come from ideas I had as a teenager that have grown into lyrics and then eventually the songs I release.
