Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with York/Leeds band Lost Trends to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Stephen ‘Rusty’ Green on vocals and guitar, Pete Knaggs on lead guitar, John Holliday on drums and Adam Perkins on bass. Rusty and Pete have known each other years and formed Lost Trends with John’s brother, who recommended John to replace him when he went travelling. Adam joined a little while later, replacing Rusty’s brother Andy who originally played bass. We are all from and around the York area. The origins of the name have been lost to history but was definitely the best we could come up with at the time, as one of the runners up was “Swedish Jesus”.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We all have similar influences which helped us gel as a unit like The Beatles and Foals, but each of us also bring a little bit of extra flavour. Rusty is influenced by alternative music like The Pixies, while Pete brings the funk with his love of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, meanwhile Adam learned how to play bass listening to The Misfits so brings that driving punk energy. We’re big fans of Idles, Yard Act and Squid, not only creating incredible music but putting on exciting live performances.
How would you describe your sound?
Indie rock with punk and dance influences.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our new single is called ‘Takedown’, it’s about struggles with mental health and facing your problems instead of ignoring them.
What’s your local music scene like?
York has a great local scene with emerging bands like Sweeping Statement that are really exciting to watch. Leeds has a great choice of venues and great bands to watch almost every night!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We’re promoting the hell out of ‘Takedown’ by getting out to as many live shows as possible, so keep an eye out on our socials to see where we’re playing next! We’ve also got even more music that we’re looking forward to releasing later in the year.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We’d love to get Nigel Godrich to produce our music, he’s one of our favourite producers. Joe Talbot from Idles and Thom Yorke would be dream collaborators as well.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
A lot of snapped strings leading to a lot of bad jokes to fill dead air!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That we’re really looking forward to sharing our new music with everyone and hope to see them all at our gigs!
