Every Monday I will be bringing you an interview with an independent band, duo or music artist. This week, I caught up with West Yorkshire band Bubble Space to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Voice: David Harling
Guitars: Tony Stuckey
Piano, keys: Tony Wade
David and Tony S met at school, we shared a love of music and arts. We met Tony W a couple of years after leaving school in and around the Wakefield music scene. We’ve been friends ever since.
Tony W first came up with the name, he saw it referred to in a converted hospital.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
David and Tony S definitely formed our friendship around a love of THE SMITHS. It is entirely by accident but people say we sound a lot like Elbow. We honestly turn up with our instruments and play, we can’t really point at current influences as there aren’t any.
How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is Bubble Space.
David Harling, Tony Stuckey and Tony Wade.
Expect anything.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
The Holding was written as a situational plea from one person to another, questioning whether some form of ‘holding’ helps? Referencing different situations, the song seeks to convey the value of personal reflection; inviting the listener to consider whether they prefer reclusion or sociability. The holding itself is not merely referring to the physical form of holding, it’s a metaphor for whatever might make us feel close to someone or something.
Ultimately, the question for the listener is what value is human contact in an otherwise virtual world? The inspiration for the song is drawn from the lived experience of people who experience extreme forms of loneliness, particularly following a bereavement.
What’s your local music scene like?
Vibrant but nobody has ever really broken through.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We are releasing our first album, March to August will see us release one track on the first Monday of each month. We will release the second half in September. We absolutely love what we have created and we hope many people enjoy it too. Alongside this we are still recording so album number two won’t be far behind!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Johnny Marr. We love his current sound, to know more about how he layers guitars to create that Guitarchestra would be amazing.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
As Bubble Space we haven’t performed live yet. We did perform under a different name years ago, the female topless dancer who joined us for a song was a bit surreal as you can probably imagine!
Do you have any upcoming live dates and performances?
No. We are focussed on studio releases at the moment, we’ve just finished the first album which we are releasing this year but we aren’t slowing down so we are halfway through the next. Creative juices are really flowing and we are reluctant to interrupt that.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We have values, we are for fairness and equality in all forms.
