Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with London based artist Alexis Lace to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from the south of France but I have been in the UK since 2005! I’ve always loved music growing up, and I started writing my own songs when I was 12. I wasn’t very good at first of course, very Britney Spears wannabe, but I really started finding my own musical identity when I hit 15. I decided I’d start writing about things that really mattered to me, my own emotional journey. I’ve never kept a diary, so writing songs has been like therapy to me!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I would say Eminem and Staind were my first major influences. Staind taught me that you could talk about the horrible things in your life, rather than just write superficial songs about boys, something I didn’t even know anything about at 12. So I started writing about my feelings and dark secrets instead. None of these songs have ever been released though as they were just not good enough, I was only practicing really. Eminem inspired me for the same reason, but he did it 200%, he really went for it! I loved how great he was at turning his own personal drama and trauma into art, it was so impressive to me. I’ve had many other influences along the way, such as Nirvana, Limp Bizkit, Alanis Morissette, Puddle of Mudd, Grandson, and anything from the League of Legends soundtrack really.
How would you describe your sound?
I would say it is electronic pop with a side of trip hop. I love experimenting with new genres though so I am definitely looking into expanding my horizons, watch this space!
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called “Unhinged”. It has 15 tracks on it and it was really experimental for me as I was mainly playing around with my DAW when I wrote it. I was no longer learning how to produce like with the previous album, I was just going deeper into all those unexplored sounds. I had multiple influences while writing it, a lot of various electropop artists such as Ashnikko, Charli XCX, Yonaka, none of them I listened to much but they somehow got in my head, as well as K-pop actually! Think K/DA, aespa, IVE. I love them. I think I just had fun, really!
What’s your local music scene like?
I live in London so it’s buzzing! I am struggling to find my place here though as in my experience it is filled with grime and indie rock. None of it is my vibe! But it is definitely a great place for a musician to go out and play.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Actually quite a lot. As always. I have never written songs in French in my life and I am RUSTY but I am currently working on a French language EP, so that’ll be my next move! I thought I’d branch out and people seemed keen. I have also already started writing album number four. I just can’t help creating! It just happens to me. I am also trying to get back into acting as I am an actor as well. It has been so hard doing that and music as well that I took a break from acting last year. And boy do I miss it now!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
UNSECRET. Oh my god. I don’t know who they are, but they are great! Amazing even. Either this or League of Legends featuring me on one of their songs, now THAT would be a dream come true!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Not really actually, as I haven’t performed a lot just yet. I did perform in March though and tried to stick to non-explicit songs just in case, just to find out the other acts playing that night were all super sweary. Lesson learned! I won’t feel like I need to hold back next time.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I want you to know that my lyrics are very personal and authentic, and if some of these feel relatable to you and help you in any way, then my mission is complete! I feel like Staind saved my life when I was 15, and probably Linkin Park too, ironically. So if I can ever save anyone the same way then… then I’ll be happy.
