Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Dublin artist Walshy to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Dublin, started playing piano at 6, got obsessed with that in my teens – playing songs by ear etc. Then got into producing hiphop when I went to college.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
For the piano stuff it was definitely Billy Joel, lyrics was Bob Dylan, then production varied – I loved Nujabes and J Dilla when I was starting. I always listened to psychedelic sounding tracks as well from the likes of The Flaming Lips and Pond. Got deep into Elliott Smith as well late teens I think.
How would you describe your sound?
A bit of a mix of everything I listen to from hip-hop to jazz/soul and a bit of pop and weird pyschedelic synthy sounds. I try to have mostly live instruments in the production as well.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Say Less Again – it’s about getting my drive back after a spell of not much going on.
What’s your local music scene like?
Bustling. The standard is insanely high right now, not like it was when I was starting out – so much goes under rated as well.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Finish a second full-length project that I’m excited for, drop some more singles along the way. Upgrade the live set definitely, plan some shows for early next year and get out the house more.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Too many to name really – everyone that has been involved in a Sleepover Club event haha.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
During my album launch night the first song my autotune pedal messed up and was way out of key – horrible start. Thankfully worked fine after that.
Do you have any upcoming live dates and performances?
Not really, just more music before the end of the year and a second full length project in the works.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Music just flows through my body.
