Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Surrey based artist Sofia Gillani to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Finding my voice as an artist was definitely a journey. I started by experimenting with different genres and styles, absorbing everything from classic pop to underground electronic sounds. Over time, I realized my truest voice came through when I stopped trying to fit into a mold and just leaned into what felt honest – both lyrically and sonically. It’s about emotion first, then sculpting the sound around that feeling. I was originally based in London, now Surrey – and have now released a variety of singles – with my song ‘Read Your Mind’ being the most recent, and my new song ‘Chains’ coming out on the 30th May!
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I have a mix of influences that really shaped my sound – I would say early on inspiration to sing came from listening to Queen, Adele, Jhené Aiko, Michael Jackson, SOS band, Owl City and Charlie Puth. Over time my taste in music has become more eclectic from The Smiths, Ariana Grande, SZA, and the band IDKHTFM.
These artists have taught me how powerful storytelling can be in a song. Little moments and emotions in their music really inspired me to be honest and detailed in my writing.
How would you describe your sound?
Avante-garde pop with a soul feel – but I love to experiment!
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
‘Chains’ refers to the chains I felt put on me from society when I was first pursuing music, and the process of taking them off. Being an independent and experimental artist, this song represents me gaining confidence as a singer to openly pursue a career as Sofia Gillani. I don’t need people to see my life to know that I’m alive, or for people to say they love me when I have the support I need as I develop. It’s completely and utterly unapologetic, as most of my music is – an anthem to blast to all the people who need confidence in their passion.
What’s your local music scene like?
Thriving! London is so diverse when I go in, and Surrey has given me so many musical opportunities!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Lots of new music, and lots of new shows – all updates are on my Instagram.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Definitely either Ariana Grande or Charlie Puth! They are so free in their music and their musicality is insane!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I actually set a speaker on fire once! It was so crazy when it happened – but at least you can’t say my performances are bold!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
If they want music for any stage of their life, or someone who is experimental and vulnerable in her music, Sofia Gillani is the independent pop artist to listen to!
