Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Torbay band Pylon Poets to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Dan Hughes – Vocals, Guitars, Synths
Sam McIver – Drums, Piano, Synths
Nathan Hughes – Bass, Backing Vocals
We all knew each other from the local scene and it seemed only a matter of time before we ended up playing together. Admittedly it took a long amount of time but it was worth the wait!
Dan’s dad actually suggested the name, it came from a group of British poets writing in the 1930s whose work deals with technological modernity.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
We all have massively varying influences, Nathan for example just from genre to genre so quickly on gig journeys that it can sometimes cause what he describes as ‘musical whiplash’!
We all have a lot of common influences which definitely helps on the creative side of things as we can all hear where each others ideas are going and can also compliment them with each individual taste.
Nathan’s favourite artists are Franz Ferdinand, Jamiroquai and Iron Maiden. Dan’s are The Killers, The Rolling Stones, Hendrix. Sam’s are Muse, Radiohead, Placebo and Led Zeppelin.
How would you describe your sound?
An eclectic mix of 00’s soundscapes with 80’s and 90’s influences wrapped up in an alt rock package!
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
The album is called ‘Demise of the Divine’ and it features social commentaries, connections, heartache and many other topics that seem to have combined themselves in to our music.
What’s your local music scene like?
There are very few original artists in our local area, but what the area lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality! If anyone has a chance to hear ANY original artists from South Devon, don’t miss the opportunity!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We have a few festival appearances as well as some gigs across the UK with hopefully more being added! After the summer we will hopefully be returning to the studio to continue working on new music.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Call Yourself Karma, we’ve written the song between us, we just need to get it recorded! It’ll be great to get that one done to show a different side to our sound and to theirs!
We would all obviously jump at the chance to collaborate with our favourite artists too!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That we appreciate every person who has listened to our music, comes to our shows, buys merch and keeps listening!
