Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Brighton band TOY PARLOUR to find out more…
How did you meet and where are you from?
We met in Brighton! We were members of the bands Gnarlah and Beach Riot, we had gigged together endlessly and even featured live for each others sets before. And then the time finally came that we decided we should meld the bands together. That’s how TOY PARLOUR was born.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
The inspirations are endless, with that being said, artists such as Dead Poet Society and Queens of the Stone Age have been a huge player for all 5 of us throughout the years.
How would you describe your sound?
It’s a heavily 90’s grunge and alternative inspired sound but written with pop sensibilities. 4 out of the 5 of us sing in the band so we love stacking gorgeous harmonies over filthy riffs which we find creates a great blend.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
“Lose It” was born out of flashes of melodies sung into our phones voice memos on long walks and whilst cooking. Those little moments turned into a song lyrically about self doubt and a feeling of helplessness, whilst at the same time musically sounding expansive, big, and free. It reflects how we often feel on the inside vs the outside.
You can also get a good bop on when you’re down the front in some sweaty venue with us, so we’ll see you there.
What’s your local music scene like?
Brighton’s music scene is, as it always has been, thriving. The grassroots in this town are always so exciting to follow. There are multiple gigs every evening ranging all types of sound and genre, we feel very fortunate to be situated in such an open and diverse community filled with some of the greatest upcoming artists in the country.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
Releases, releases and more releases. We are always gigging and always writing, we never stop. You’ll see us all over the UK in the next year or so, so better keep an eye out.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
It is such early days for us that we feel like we need to stake our claim on our own sound before we start collaborating with anyone else.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We are in this purely for the love of the game. We have all been in the industry a while now, we have all become jaded with various things and now all come out the other side. We love what we do, we love creating with each other and we like to think that our listeners will be able to notice that in the songs we make.
